About me...
I am a landscape painter who enjoys wild places and I seek to convey my delight with an intense colour palette.
I work experimentally, and develop my own techniques to achieve a result in which I seek to be faithful to the place and my emotional response. I use vibrant colours and a semi-abstract style to give a strong and distinctive personal voice in my work.
My inspiration has always been the wildness of the Northern landscape, and these are paintings of the views I love most… the North Pennines and the hills of the Lake District, the wild places, ravaged by time and weather. Some are just fragments, rocks along the way or a forbidding cliff with a glimpse of the sky.
The paintings on the website are the result of around three years of experimentation in working with Indian ink and watercolour. I use large brushes and bamboo pens, which can lead to frustration when things go wrong, but it’s very exciting when it works!
I am a keen walker and spend a lot of time in the hills in all weathers. I sketch and take photographs on location and always follow this up with further drawings in the studio. This is a process of discovery: the final work which eventually emerges may not be what I had in mind in the first place. I like to think that a spark of this excitement is evident in the finished paintings and is shared with the viewer.
I have exhibited widely in the North East both in group and solo shows at venues such as the Bowes Museum, The Station at Richmond, Darlington Arts Centre and the Witham Arts Centre here in Barnard Castle. I regularly open my studio to visitors and particularly enjoy the direct contact with my customers which this method of exhibiting permits.
