Welcome to Ann Whitfield Art

I was born in the North of England, but exiled to the far south by the demands of family and work for twenty years. I returned to live in Teesdale in 2002. Now home, I try to paint my experience of the northern hills, where I walk and sketch as often as I can. I am inspired by the drama and bleakness of the landscape, which gives me an overwhelming sense of exhilaration. But I can also be amazed by the beauty of a piece of rotten wood or a patch of wild flowers, it has been said that my pictures are full of joy, and it is this sense of sheer delight that I wish to share.

My most recent work has been based on the moors and rock formations of Teesdale and Baldersdale, close to where I live, and on the high fells of the Lake District. I sketch using watercolours and charcoal, and occasionally pastels or pencil crayons. I work on these at home with further drawing before painting my larger landscapes in acrylics. I prefer to work on paper, often using collage to build up textures and create highlights as I paint. I love to use clear, bright colours straight from the tube, adding depth to layer upon layer of transparent paints. Paint is applied with a palette knife or a brush - or anything else which comes to hand! Other media is often incorporated, most often charcoal or soft pastels. I also enjoy painting flowers, lichens, fungi and anything else which can be found under my feet, for these subjects I tend to use watercolour, or ink and wash, and enjoy the challenge of more literal illustrative approach, but still using the same palette of pure transparent colours.

I am a member of the Teesdale Artists' Network and have been involved in the Teesdale Open Studios event since it began in 2008. In addition to participating in group shows I am please to exhibit work at home (and welcome visitors to my studio-cum-kitchen!) during the summer months and during Open Studio events.  Other venues have included the Castle Gallery in Barnard Castle, the Bowes Museum and the Art Works Galleries in Newcastle.
